REACH Restriction on Diisocyanates

REACH Regulations have established new rules for the use of products containing more than 0.1% of monomeric diisocyanates. This includes polyurethane products such as adhesives, sealants, coatings or injections used in industrial production or construction.

The restriction on diisocyanates under the EU’s REACH regulation introduces new minimum training requirements for workers handling diisocyanates and mixtures containing diisocyanates.

The aim of the regulation is to minimize the adverse health effects following exposure to diisocyanates at the workplace. All industrial and professional workers handling the products are required to complete training on the safe use of diisocyanates.

Depending on the exposure level in the workplace, workers must to be trained in the following areas: general training (basic level), Intermediate training (depending on the application). Advanced training (some special applications or tasks). Transition time for fulfilling the training requirement of 3 years after entry into force. All workers handling products must complete the training by August 24th, 2023 and the training must be renewed at least every five years. Documentation by the employer or self-employed of the successful completion of the training is mandatory.

For further information on the safe use of diisocyanates and legal training requirements can be obtained via the internet platform created by the raw material manufacturers’ association ISOPA (European Diisocyanate & Polyol Producers Association) / ALIPA (European Aliphatic Isocyanate Producers Association) https://safeusediisocyanates.eu/
